Aina Stenberg MasOlle Jenny Nyström was undoubtedly the leading Christmas card artist with a naturalistic style, but when it comes to the decorative school, the foremost representative was unarguably Aina Stenberg. She varied two motifs to perfection on cards, runners, napkins, placement cards, posters, and advent calendars. Her signature small Santas and the beautiful “national cards,” with colorful provincial costumes, were inspired by the summers and Christmases spent in the folkloristic province of Dalarna where Aina Stenberg’s husband, painter Helmer MasOlle, grew up. Aina Stenberg painted a couple of thousand motifs, selling her first Christmas motif for one krona at the age of 18 and ending her painting career in her 90s when she was beginning to lose her eyesight. While Aina Stenberg’s lead pencils were sharpened until they were like needles, her watercolors were soft and fresh. The effect of this was further enhanced as her cards were hand-lithographed in eight colors. Her motifs got simpler and cleaner as she aged.
